Why we write
Ask what remains of a case file in the end, and the answer is always the same: what was written.
What is said at a hearing flies away. What enters the record remains. A sentence given in a statement will stand, years later, exactly as it was taken down, before a judge reading the file. That is why work at this office begins with writing, not with talking.
One client arrives here on the worst day of his life; another in one of her best. One is under criminal investigation, the other is buying a house on the Marmara shore. Both matters turn on the same point: what the record says.
Whatever the field, every file turns on the same question: what went on record, when, and in which words.
